Tools for Teachers: 3 Feedback Strategies That Save Time and Improve Learning
Wednesday wisdom: Your feedback matters, but it doesn't all have to come from you!
Today's theme: Giving students the feedback they need without sacrificing your weekends.
Tool #1: Two Stars and a Wish
What it is: A simple feedback structure where students (or you) identify two specific strengths and one area for growth—takes 2 minutes per student.
Research backing: Feedback has a 0.73 effect size (Hattie), but only when it's specific and actionable. This structure ensures quality over quantity.
How to use it:
⭐ Star 1: "One thing you did really well is..."
⭐ Star 2: "Another strength I notice is..."
💫 Wish: "One thing that would make this even better is..."
Use for peer feedback, self-assessment, or quick teacher comments.
Works for any subject, any grade, any assignment type.
Quick win: Balances positive reinforcement with actionable improvement—and takes a fraction of the time of detailed written feedback.
Tool #2: Feedback Templates
What it is: Pre-written comment templates for common feedback themes—copy, paste, personalize key parts, and send.
Research backing: Consistent feedback helps students recognize patterns in their work and builds self-awareness about recurring issues.
How to use it:
Create 3-5 templates for your most common feedback:
"Great evidence! Next, try connecting this back to your main claim by..."
"I can see you understand [concept]. To demonstrate mastery, add..."
"Strong start! To strengthen this, focus on [specific element]..."
Copy template, customize the bracketed sections for each student.
Saves time while maintaining personalization.
Quick win: 10 minutes per paper becomes 2-3 minutes—without sacrificing quality.
Tool #3: Live Feedback During Practice
What it is: Instead of collecting work and grading later, circulate during practice time and give immediate verbal feedback students can act on right away.
Research backing: Immediate feedback prevents misconceptions from becoming habits and allows real-time course correction.
How to use it:
During independent or group work time, circulate strategically.
Stop at each student/group for 30-60 seconds.
Give one specific piece of actionable feedback:
"Try starting your next paragraph with..."
"Check your third step—what's the pattern?"
"Great reasoning! Can you add evidence to support it?"
Students implement feedback immediately while you're still available.
Quick win: Students get help when they need it most (during the work, not days later) and you don't take papers home to grade.

This Week's Challenge
Choose ONE feedback tool and commit to using it three times this week.
Ask yourself:
How much time am I saving compared to my usual feedback method?
Is the feedback students receive just as helpful (or more helpful)?
Are students actually using the feedback to improve?
